Educational building expansion and rehabilitation in Vila Verde
The intervention focused on increasing the internal clear height of the pavilion to support automotive mechatronics training, allowing the full use of vehicle lifts and specialised equipment. The building footprint and urban presence were maintained, reinforcing a strategy of reuse rather than replacement.
Rather than proposing a complete reconstruction, the project adopts a strategy of targeted architectural transformation. The pavilion structure was reconfigured to support a new roof geometry, allowing greater internal height, improved natural ventilation, and the introduction of skylights to enhance daylight conditions. These changes significantly improve spatial quality and working conditions without altering the overall urban presence of the building.
The architectural approach prioritised functional clarity, durability, and adaptability. Spaces were designed to support evolving pedagogical needs, integration of new technologies, and intensive daily use. The project demonstrates how architectural rehabilitation and controlled expansion can extend the life and relevance of existing educational infrastructure, reinforcing a sustainable approach to public and institutional architecture.
